Decorative Baby Pillow Sewing Free Tutorial

I love this lovely decorative baby pillow. I made it for my son. Actually I made it to explain how I made appliques and saved for my son. In this article, I tried to explain making this cute pillow step by step. I love making and telling how to do. However, I am not good at taking photo, sorry for this 🙂

Firstly, I prepared the materials. You will see below how I made bias. Actually, This is not the right way arranging bias, but I preferred because of easiness.

Preparing Bias

You can buy bias or prepare it yourself like me. If you want to make perfect bias, you can also keep the rules. I will give you a tutorial link for preparing perfect bias binding tape at the and of the page.

Actually, Photo tells the steps clearly. Just I should specify that I used zipper presser foot for sewing.

Alternatively, you can use pompons. This is also cute.

Preparing Fabric Pieces

My pillow is 30×30 cm in size. Size is up to you. I cut 32×32 cm fabric for front side of pillow. For the backside 14×32 cm and 26×32 cm fabric I cut. I wanted to show measurements on a diagram in order to make them clear.

I made aplique on front side. How cute the chick, isnt it 🙂 I searched so much and selected this cuteness among many photos. There is no detail in front side preparing. Let’s look at back side.

1. I cut the fabric pieces. Then, I ironed seam allowence as shown in the photo.
2. I put hot melt adhesive film between fabric and ironed again. I did it to make this part a bit rigit. Rigitness will help to open button holes easier. Moreover, this gives a professional look. I made this step for two pieces.
3. Sewing time.
4. I opened the button holes. I made it with sewing machine, but if you don’t know openning button hole, you can use sew on snap buttons. It will be nice that way too.

Preparing materials is finished. Time to combine them.

Let’s Sew Decorative Baby Pillow

1. I attached bias and front of front side fabric piece of decorative baby pillow. Then, sewed it. I used zipper presser foot for sewing. At corners I cut, as seen in the photo, for sewing better.
2. Ironing is my best friend at sewing. I ironed seam allowence to sew in next steps easier.
3. I put fabric piece with button holes’s face to apliqued fabric’s face. Then, I sewed it. It is so hard to attach them with needles. Therefore, I hold with hand while sewing.
4. I made step 3 again for other part.
5. I cleared edges and turned the pillow inside-out, press the seams with an iron.
6. Lastly, sewed buttons.

Cute baby decorative pillow is finished. I loved it so much. Actually this can be done for any pillow not only for baby’s pillow.
