Poplin Fabric Properties, What is Poplin?

The word Poplin comes from the French word “papeline”. When it was first produced, it was made of silk yarns. Nowadays, poplin comes to mind with a 100 percent cotton fabric. However, it can contain different yarns such as polyester, silk and rayon. Shortly what we can say about poplin is tight and regular woven fabric made with fine yarn.

Poplin fabric; those with one hundred percent cotton; thanks to its air permeability, it is a kind of fabric which is preferred both in summer and in winter. It is breathable, does not make sweat, absorbs sweat, crease easily but is easy to iron. Moreover, It is flexible, lightweight, tight woven but soft. Although thin, it keeps warm due to its frequent weaving.

You can find this fabrics with lots of color, pattern alternatives. They’re pretty. Looking at these is even enjoyable.

Where is Poplin Fabric Used?

Poplin fabric, which is popular since its first production, has many uses. It is indispensable for women’s dresses due to its stylish appearance.

In the 15th century people preferred it for winter clothing. Although it was made with silk, it was not considered luxurious and its usage was common. In the 19th century it was mostly preferred as upholstery fabric.

With its texture and stylish appearance, you can see a lot of products made with poplin in both daily and formal wear. Due to its form, it is suitable for many products. Shirts, tunics, dresses are some of them. Moreover, trousers and coats can be sewn from thicker poplin.

It is used in men’s and women’s t-shirts, trousers, shirts, dresses, tunics and home furnishing. It is also suitable for embroidery and other handicrafts. Its texture is smooth.

How to Wash?

As with any product, it is first necessary to comply with the washing recommendation on the label. Generally washable up to 60 degrees. If you iron firstly back side then front site of the moist fabric, you will get a better result.
