Gabardine Fabric is tightly woven fabric. It is traditionally made of worsted wool, but may also be cotton, polyester, rayon or any blend. Polyester ones, sometimes called “gabardreme”. There are varieties, but when it comes to gabardine, the first thing that comes to mind is that it is a healthy fabric with cotton or fine wool.

Gabardine is a kind of twill. That is, It is a fabric woven with twill pattern. Thomas Burberry invented the fabric and revived the name in 1879, patented it in 1888. Gabardine’s meaning is “closely woven cloth”.

Properties

It does not to make sweat, not to wrinkle. Moreover, It is robust, durable, breathable and waterproof due to frequent texture.

Fabric shine is the frequent consumer complaint concerning gabardine.  Moreover, wool, cotton, rayon ones are subject to shrinkage from moisture.

Usage of Gabardine Fabric

Since it is a thick and tough fabric, it is more suitable for seasonal use. It keeps warm because being thick. So people do not like wearing it in summer.

It is used for garments such as sportswear, skirt, jacket, trenchcoat, trousers, thick pants as jeans, outerwear. People also prefer gabardine fabric for making work clothes, hats, bags and cloth shoes because it is waterproof.

You can also use it in the clothes you want to keep fluffy. Since it is tightly woven, it will remain fluffy. Moreover, thickness ensures that it is used in the surface coating area.

How to Care

Gabardine fabrics are generally not machine washed. Dry cleaning of wool ones is recommended. Those that are washable should be washed by hand and at a temperature of 40 degrees or less. Cotton ones can be washed at a higher temperature than wool ones. You should be more sensitive to gabardines made of wool. In order not to shine bright it, ironing cloth should be used and iron at low temperature. Gabardine made from synthetic fibres is even more sensitive to heat.
